The old frog’s gift

Somewhere on a run there is a door that is easy to miss, and behind it an old frog hands you a card covered in unreadable symbols. Nothing official explains it. Everything below comes from players who found it, and it contains spoilers.

Finding the door

Players describe it as an extra door off to the side in a camp, next to the two main doors you pick between (first report). Two things trip people up, both from players rather than the developers:

  • Open it first. The advice repeated in more than one thread is that the side door only opens if you have not opened either main door in that camp yet (Reddit reply). A Steam player explaining the same thing puts it the other way round: “If you don’t unlock either camp door before going through the tunnel, you can proceed normally” (in Steam discussion: Sectret tunnel bug). Once you commit to a main door, that chance is gone for the camp, and two players in a bug thread who opened a door first and then got into the tunnel anyway report being stuck, walking into the wall between the doors (in Steam discussion: Can't progress after going through secret tunnel).
  • It does not light up. A player answering the same question says the door is not highlighted, and you use the normal break or unlock cards on it (Reddit reply). What break and unlock cards do is covered in the beginner guide.

What players make of it

Several who found it were let down. One wrote that it seems “like it’s going to be some amazing thing because of how weird the whole thing is” and then turns out to be “such a meh effect”, and another hoped for more random events like it (both in Steam discussion: Old Frog Gift). A third floated a theory instead: “If I have to guess It might be a ‘true final boss’ thing since the card gives poison and the entity at the end of a run talks about eating you.” (in Steam discussion: Old Frog Gift)

Nothing has backed that up yet. On a separate thread about the ending, one player who took the frog’s card says their ending did not change; the ending page covers that thread along with the other ideas about the Gloom Worm. Some players also call the card a Foresight; how Foresight works is on the Foresight page.
