Games like Shroom and Gloom

Every comparison below comes from someone who played it or made it, with a link to where they said it. The genre notes on the other games are deliberately short.

The comparisons, and who made them

A developer favourite is not the same as a design influence: the developers have not said which games shaped Shroom and Gloom. The store page also sells it in bundles with Slots & Daggers, The Loopler and Vampire Crawlers (see Shroom and Gloom on the Steam store, 10 September 2026).

What Shroom and Gloom does differently

A deck for exploring

“Build 2 distinct decks! Use the combat deck to survive fierce battles! Use the explore deck to navigate dungeons, modify your cards, and unlock new weapons and abilities!”

Eat, don’t block

“Why block your enemies when you could eat them instead!” You season, skewer or roast enemies and eat them to get health back, or cook them into soups.

Cards that keep growing

“Grow low level starting cards into over-powered attacks, or modify rare cards into game-breaking super-weapons!”

First person

You walk the tunnels yourself. The store page calls it a first-person, roguelike double-deckbuilder.

All four come from the About This Game section of Shroom and Gloom on the Steam store, 10 September 2026. The idea dates back to the 2021 game jam: loving other roguelike deckbuilders but wondering whether they needed more cardplay, the team says “we wanted to make one where everything is a card.” from Team Lazerbeam devlog on itch.io: We did it! Shroom and Gloom Prototype is here!, 13 September 2024 For how the two decks actually interact in a run, read cards and the two decks, and for the camp side that one reviewer likens to Darkest Dungeon, resting and camp.

If you came from one of those games

  • From Slay the Spire: reviewers find the fights familiar. The new part is a whole second phase of card play between them. Start with the beginner guide.
  • From Inscryption: the art style is the link reviewers draw. What players think of the rest is on the reviews page.
  • Not sure yet: the free demo is the cheapest way to find out.
